Which sport generates the most profit?

http://www.marketwatch.com
The Sports industry generates an astounding amount of revenue each year, but where does the most of that revenue come from? Which sport generates the most profit for the industry? The United States holds 4 of the 5 top spots, for most revenue generated by a sports league, with the NHL, NBA, MLB, and the NFL coming on top of all of them.

According to Steven Kutz in an article he wrote for Market Watch, a website dedicated towards financial news, The NFL comes in the top ranks with a revenue of about $13 billion last year. This makes sense because as a nation football is probably one of the most “American” sports other than baseball, which came in second with $9.5 billion in revenue last year. However American leagues do not hold all top 3 spots, The Premier League(English/Welsh football league) generated $5.3 billion last year.  These three leagues generate over $27.8 billion a year for the sports industry as a whole, and it’s no wonder since these are the top sports in their respective countries.

In the next post I will be looking into which events generate the most profit for this industry to better understand why and just how much money the sports industry earns annually? (Analyzing ticket sales, TV deals, merchandise, etc.).

  1. Maybe you could add something about how it might be different from country to country or what sport promotes the most income depending on the state? Because the popularity of sports can differ from place to place.

  2. You did a good job of collecting data and analyzing but I think you could even go further in your analysis of why these sports are so profitable.
